What is "Vintage'?

"It's Vintage"

The very word sparks a hot debate for passionate fashionistas, with some having damn near scientific descriptions of what they deem to be worthy.  But what is vintage exactly?

With so many small shops and boutiques to choose from, it's more important now than ever to know your shit so you don't end up overpaying for nonsense. Here are a few tips if you are just starting up your vintage shopping game.

First up, in order for anything to be called vintage, it must be able to buy a drink. Meaning, 20 years is the benchmark we're looking for. The easiest way to find out is to ask the shop associate, but if you're still skeptical Google it.

Second, and this is true with all designer fashions new and old, there are different levels of Vintage shopping. Unless you are an absolute trained pro, do not expect to stumble upon a mint condition Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, or YSL without a heavy price tag or a fight.  These labels are the most coveted to collectors and Vintage sellers, so getting your hands on a piece in good condition at a great price would take skill, but mostly luck.

And finally, and the most important tip of all is to do whatever the fuck you want! When it comes to fashion, it's always best to follow your heart and what makes you happy. So even if it's knock off Mod style ZARA shirt dress from 2007 that you just HAVE to have for $35, then get it! And yes, that was oddly specific because I did it and I look damn good in it.

Style is subjective, so don't let age or labels affect how you shop. Shopping Vintage or Thrift shops helps to keep your carbon footprint low, helps to support local shops, and if it's held up for long, it will probably last a lot longer than Xerox paper dress you everyone else bought from ZARA.
