Last Sunday marked another year for the the Brooklyn Music and Arts Festival Afropunk. What started as a relatively small festival has grown to an annual gathering of Afrocentric tastemakers. With an atmosphere ripe with creative fervor, let's take a moment to appreciate the most noted themes from this festival.
So here are 5 Afropunk trends you can work into your Fall wardrobe to infuse a little Afropunk into your everyday.
#5 Written word T-shirts
The spirit of Afro style has always been loud and direct. But for the days when you are feeling especially passion but dont have the time to express everything you're feeling, then let your clothing say it for you.
My favorite T-shirt in my closet is my "mad ethnic" T-shirt from Atlanta based brand @SoukBohemian . It's soft and oversized so I can layer it over my white button down shirts once the cool weather starts creeping in.

#4 Layer Prints
Brown Skin is the perfect canvas for bold colors and prints. This has been made very clear by just about EVERYONE in Black Hollywood. It is known.
So it goes without saying that bold and bright prints are an absolute must, but whoever said you have to choose just one needs to sit down. Layering prints can be so fun and expressive when you get it right. So take out your favorite bold prints and try a few combinations until you find a few you love.
Tip: Try to keep the scale or size of the prints as relatively close as possible and have at least one similar color between the two prints so the overall look feels like purposeful. For example with this amazing look by @JaynelleNicole , the small print on her top is roughly the same scale as the background print on her skirt. And the black and white in her top ties into the black and white incorporated in the pattern of her skirt. Then by adding a matching headband and keeping all her accessories minimal, she created a lightweight and beautiful summer style.
If you're looking for printed layering pieces for Fall, check out local fashion designs by @OkinKreation , they’ve started making sporty printed bomber jackets perfect for sweater weather.

#3 Let me hear you say Halo! HALO!!
Is this a look? Yes. But we're already here so we may as well serve.
What better way to make an entrance than than by wearing a literal fucking halo like the pure, uncut Goddess that you are! The best part is that this goes with just about any hairstyle you can imagine. Personally, I love it with a high puff and long skirt for that little extra drama.
Seattle based accessories designer @apatico sells gorgeous and perfectly understated Halos from her online shop as well as some pretty sick Holographic harnesses for other activities. If you're into that, of course!

#2 African Print Dusters
The Duster will forever be a staple for my Fall wardrobe and on more than one occasion, my Spring and Summer wardrobe. This weekend I saw quite a few fashion mavens show out in colorful dusters as a lightweight, yet impactful layering essential.
Tip: When finding the the perfect duster, go for the one with a pattern that has most colors that you already own! More colors mean more choices which will come in handy when you're short on time and need a quick layer before running off to your morning meetings.
New York designer @ku.chena has a great selection of dusters and even offers custom orders so you should definitely check her out

#1 Stacked Ndebele Jewelry
This accessory needs no introduction. It is a strong and effortlessly GORGEOUS Look and one of my personal favorites in African accessories.
I have been obsessed with Ndebele stacked metallic jewelry for so long, but I never seemed to get around to committing to buying a set. But this year, may be the year that all changes. I mean, look at this! LOOK!
I cannot wait to get my hands on my first set from @zulubeads_ada for my birthday present to myself next month. I am going to wear this to death, and then I'm gonna keep wearing it. Say I won't.
